Clean Water and Food Prep
So we put in a request for a water filter, which was approved. The filter cost 200 nuevo soles, the trick to converting (roughly) is to divide by 5 and double the answer to get the value in CA$. The filter should be good for about 6 months, and will probably encourage us to use it more than if we had a water cooler, which was the other option. Here is a shot of our newly installed water filter all ready to dispense tasty filtered water for us to drink:
Note the sweet electrician’s tape work I did to temporarily hold the water tube out of the way of the taps. We’ll replace that with plastic loops or hooks stuck to the ceramic (once I locate a source).
If you look at the left side of the sink you can see some veggies soaking. We have been pretty careful (raw egg Pisco Sours aside) with our food, and what I”m doing here is soaking the washed veg for a few minutes in a weak bleach cleansing solution (3 drops/ 3 litres water) recommended by our doc contact at CUSO. After the soak we rinse them in drinking water and so far everything has been peachy.
The lunches at the local cafe’s tend to revolve more around starches and meats than veggies, so one of Christina’s early commandments upon touching down in Barranco was “Thou dinner shalt be fresh salad.” This is my attempt to appease her each night:
She seems content for now, but I won’t deny the torrid hamburger dreams I have late in the night.
that looks delicioso!
Great salad! Please teach me to make one!
Cuando quieres, Gaby! Stephen will be happy to share his recipe 🙂
