Taxes

So they say that the only things that are sure in life are death and taxes… But it seems that there are perhaps a few exceptions to the rule.

The San Juan de Miraflores district of Lima, where I work, runs as its own municipality. The new government is installed and it is busy putting up cheerful signs all over town saying some version of: Together we’re changing our district Join us by paying your taxes. Or even Discount for paying by this date.

I only recently found out why it is such a big public messaging campaign: currently 80% of people DO NOT pay taxes! It gives you an idea of the context in which the municipality is trying to get things done…
