First Impressions of Santiago, Chile
We just arrived in Santiago and it feels like such a breath of fresh air compared to Lima. I wasn’t expecting to like it because I’ve been feeling a bit done with big cities, but Santiago is a page from a different book than Lima. It has pedestrian-only streets, bustling with Santiaguinos walking around, a lively cafe-culture with little tables spilling out into the streets, and great green spaces. It has an underground metro system that makes it easy to get around and the drivers don’t seem to feel the need to drive with one hand hovering over the horn. What a nice change!
Here are a few glimpses. Click on any picture below to see the fullscreen slideshow.
- Green Central Plaza
- Cafe culture
- Pedestrian zones and stand-up cafes (“cafes con piernas” – Literally cafes with legs)
- Our hostel right by a metro station
- Metro murals
- Metro mural 2
- BIP – the name of the metro card is a slight mutation of “V.I.P.” for the first users of the metro system….
- Streets of Santiago
- Central market
- Fish market and hot dining spot all rolled into one
- Mini restaurant right inside the main fish market of Santiago
- Fish lunch for Stephen
- Mural
All looks very exciting and lovely – fish lunch excepted.
Thank you for all the nice photographs – Santiago seems a richer city. How come Stephen has food and Christina only has a beer?
Mine is on its way!
