Buenos Aires
Buenos Aires! By chance, we arrived exactly in time for the famous Sunday fair of the San Telmo neighbourhood. So we spent our first day wandering the streets and taking it all in. We definitely got the impression that the inhabitants of this city are a creative bunch! We even came across a carver who dried whole orange peels and then carved them into little boxes. You could still smell the orange perfume.
Another fun thing about Argentina is the obsession with yerba mate tea. Many people drink their tea out of carved gourd and use a metal straw to filter out any unwanted tea particles. I kept spotting, what we’ve taken to calling “Thermos huggers” who take with them their gourd of tea and a whole thermos of hot water tucked under one arm for refills as they stroll down the street.
Overall we’ve been having a great time exploring the various neighbourhoods, the streets overflowing with inviting places to stop and have a drink and a bite. We even caught some tango! But I’ll leave that for another post.
Here are a few glimpses of the city. Click on any picture to open the gallery slider.
I like the carved gourds – so much fun! Thanks for the pictures of BA – are you going to Patagonia?
